Click here to download Paying for College Handout. Mr. Stevenson is a volunteer in the Spring Branch Independent School District where he has served on the Budget Committee, the Bond Committee, the College-Focused Committee, and presently serves on the Board of Trustees. In 2004 Mr. Stevenson created a seminar entitled “Paying for College: Tax Strategies and Financial Aid”. In an effort to share this information with parents in the district he began writing letters to the 40 principals in the district’s elementary, middle, and high schools. It was offered as a free parent seminar on federal financial aid. My primary goal is to teach all parents about the process, the products, the politics, and the language of federal financial aid. In one hour this seminar will make you an expert in federal financial aid. Every parent in our district, including parents of at risk children, should have the tools to engage the federal financial aid system and that includes state aid by way of the Hinson-Hazelwood Student Loan Program as well as institutional aid, which would include the endowment of your particular university. It has been a slow steady process but I am very humbled by the support I have gotten from the district’s administration and the campus principals and post-secondary counselors. I have learned that they take ownership of their community and work for the post-secondary success of all students. |
